The Definition Has Three Parts
Who for, what problem, and where to stop. Without these three nailed down, every later decision wobbles, and the cost of the wobble keeps growing.
What you will run into
What Each Part Has to Hit
How to Check You Got It Right
After writing, run these three questions over it. If any one has no answer, go back and revise.
- Can you name one specific person? If not, the target-user box is still empty.
- What do they use now, and why would they switch? The answer can't be "we're easier to use"—you have to name the specific step where it differs.
- What are you explicitly not doing? If you can't name a single thing, the boundary isn't set yet.
Note for the AI
Write the three parts into the project's first document, and bring them along every time you ask the AI to build a feature.
PROMPT · Product definition
That last line is the most valuable part of this prompt. It turns the AI from an executor into a gatekeeper on the boundary — and stops a lot of spur-of-the-moment features.
