Ask About Behavior, Not Intention

People can't predict what they'll do next, but they remember what they did last week. So only ask about the past, never the future.

What you will run into

It's not users being evasive. When answering a hypothetical, people picture an idealized version of themselves — one with plenty of time, no inertia, and an eagerness to learn. The real person will go back to the familiar old method next week.

And another layer: the person you're asking wants to make you feel good. You took the time to ask, so they're embarrassed to say it's useless. Asking about intention is basically inviting a polite answer.

How to Rephrase

The rule is simple: replace every "would you / do you want to / do you need" with "last time / at the time / how did you."

The goal of the interview is to dig toward the top two cells. Hearing "right now I just make my own spreadsheet" is worth more than ten "that's very important"s.

Which Signals Are Hardest

Rank them by credibility and you'll know which direction to probe.
